Fire Dreams, A Poem. What do you think?

Fire Dreams

We four sit amongst the barren pasture
Not thinking, nor dreaming, nor hoping,
Just sitting along side one another
Letting our fire we built ravage through
The endless hours of the night.
Nothing special makes it memorable;
Rather, the night itself marks the occasion.
Our lawn chairs position in all four directions:
North, south, east, and west. Four seats
To direct us through life’s next turns
And twists that renew each and every day.

Dried up weeds cover the fields beneath our feet
As summer’s fury wreaks havoc on the Texas plains.
We dig markings into the ground,
So that when we each pass out from our adolescent ways
The fire’s waves will perish by dirt.

Each of us carries our own tunes and tales,
Stories of all emotional tolls and times.
Most nights we just try to laugh
Because the other sentiments just seem to hard
For any of us to bear. So we joke.

Strange voices from the ends of fences
Sound off randomly as we keep watching our creation.
We try to envision who or what they are sometimes.
Other times we let them pass off as fiction,
Illusions of our minds and the summer’s heat.
Either way we still try to imagine what unthinkable
Creature could be rummaging in nowhere.

As the fire smothers to crackled coals,
And we finish a few more beers
Our eyes swelter closer to their lids.
Smokey wind dyes our clothes and we
All falter off to a deep, deep sleep.

Once, many years ago, as the others departed with the night,
I awoke, and walked towards the nearest tree line.
Far off in the distance I journeyed,
Picturing an answer waiting just a bit further over the hill.
As the others snuggled a bit closer to the dead
Fire’s heat, I danced among the noises of the night
Waking one of you to wonder who lingered off in the distance
